Project Pari - Singapore Flyer (Nov 2011)
What a glorious day it was for the year-end outing with Project Pari girls and members at the Singapore Flyer. It was a treat not only for the girls on 19 November 2011.  We all had a good time too as we were able to experience the magnificent view of Singapore from various vantage heights.

There were altogether 86 persons in the group, with 55 girls, 13 teachers and 19 Zontians, volunteers and friends . The event started with an early lunch at Popeyes Louisiana Chicken, and everyone had a chance to warm up and get acquainted.  The representative from the Singapore Flyer extended their warm welcome and gave all the girls a Flyer design cut-out notebook and multi-colored pen. A pleasant surprise for all!

We were all encouraged by the coverage of the event by Channel News Asia news. The journey started with a fascinating interactive exhibition leading up to the actual 25 minute ride. Each Zontian gamely accompanied different schools, playing buddy over lunch and in the Flyer cabins, taking this opportunity to intermingle with the schoolgirls. The clear day allowed wonderful views of the city skyline and even glimpses of the Riau Islands in the great distance. The girls had to focus on some details of the sights around and of the Flyer to answer a witty quiz by Zontian Malathi that included an intriguing question on how many giraffes would make up the height of the Flyer. For those who really want to know, do check details that can be found on the Flyer’s website.

Steve Huang of Mindchamps, again, generously contributed his time and his energy. His great sense of fun and motivation was simply infectious.  He led in the games with his 4 friends and drew the girls from the different schools together for a relaxing time of fun and laughter.  After the energetic games, Popeyes kindly contributed additional ice tea to quench the thirst of all participants. A touching and timely gift!

Many Project Pari girls commented that this is the best year-end party so far and many won several prizes in the quiz and games. Each girl went away with fond memories of fun and little gift bags, lovingly packed by Wan Joo and Rosalind.

For Zonta, this outing was not just something for our Project Pari girls; our experience here imbues us with a great sense of humility and purpose when we know that there are so many who are so willing to extend their time and effort to join in our cause.

Project Pari - Lifeskills Workshop (July 2011)
We held our annual Project Pari Lifeskills Workshop on Saturday, 9 July 2011 at The Pines on Stevens Road. A total of 52 schoolgirls and 10 teachers attended the six-hour workshop. Twenty Zontians were in attendance overseeing the smooth running of the workshop.

The topics: “Communicating Effectively” facilitated by Zontian, Ida Ong, an Image Consultant.

“Champions MindSet” facilitated by Steve Huang, a volunteer from “Mind Champs” – an organization offering motivational and leadership programs for students.

“Teen and the Law” facilitated by Ms Min Lim, Lawyer and Author, who shared excerpts of her book on law and governance relevant to teenagers. NUS Law Students from its Pro Bono Group, chipped in by performing a skit on shoplifting and its consequences.

The sessions were lively and interactive and the facilitators were happy enthused by the response from the students. The take-home messages for the participants were clear and constructive, and there was positive feedback from the students.

The teachers present were happily enthused about the programs as these were not covered at ‘neighbourhood’ schools due to lack of resources. It was a very successful and satisfying day for everyone.
